My journey to Komic was driven by a deep sense of calling. I’ve always felt a pull towards the mountains, and when I first visited Spiti Valley, something in me just clicked. But alongside this beauty, I also saw the challenges faced by the community, particularly in terms of education and opportunities for the younger generation.

The idea for Planet Spiti Foundation took shape as I spent more time in the region. I realized that to make a true difference, I needed to invest in the future of these children, helping them gain access to quality education and skills that could empower them to build a better life. It was a combination of my love for the place, my late beloved father, and my desire to give back that led me to start the foundation. Now, it’s not just a project; it’s a purpose that drives me every day.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when establishing the Planet Spiti Foundation in such a remote and high-altitude region? How did you overcome them?

Establishing the Planet Spiti Foundation in a remote and high-altitude region like Spiti Valley presented significant challenges. The first major hurdle was the isolation and lack of basic infrastructure. Spiti is cut off from the rest of the world for nearly half the year due to heavy snowfall, making it difficult to access resources and connect with the outside world.

Another challenge was gaining the trust of the local community. As an outsider, it was crucial for me to understand their way of life, their needs, and their aspirations. Building those relationships took time, patience, and a lot of listening. The high altitude also posed significant difficulties. The harsh weather conditions and thin air made it physically demanding to carry out everyday tasks, let alone run an organization. Even something as simple as transporting materials or setting up a stable internet connection was daunting.

I overcame these challenges by focusing on collaboration and community involvement. I partnered with local leaders and gained their support, which was key to integrating the foundation’s work into the community. Take, for example, Tenzin Norzom, a bright 8-year-old girl from a remote village in Spiti called Kiamo. Before joining our boarding school, Norzom’s educational opportunities were extremely limited. Harsh winters made it nearly impossible for her to attend school regularly, and access to quality learning resources was scarce. Her parents were contemplating sending her to a nunnery to reduce their financial burden. However, since becoming part of our foundation's programs, Norzom has blossomed. She is excelling in her studies and has developed a passion for environmental conservation, music, dance, and other co-curricular activities. She now dreams of becoming a scientist to help protect the fragile ecosystem of Spiti. Her confidence and enthusiasm are palpable, and it’s clear that the foundation’s holistic approach to education has opened up a world of possibilities for her.

One of our most significant collaborations has been with local organizations and community leaders in Spiti. Their deep understanding of the region has been invaluable in tailoring our programs to meet local needs effectively. Our current collaboration with a local NGO named Rinchen Zangpo Society and its private primary school in another village named Rongtong is one of the best examples of meaningful partnerships, as we have now expanded. Our initiative now benefits over 150 children in the age group of 3-9 years, which is a significant change considering we started with only three students in 2021.

Throughout my journey with the Planet Spiti Foundation, I've learned that true impact comes from unwavering commitment and adaptability. One of the most valuable lessons is that progress often happens in small, incremental steps. Patience and perseverance are essential.

I've also discovered the power of community collaboration—how working together and valuing diverse perspectives can overcome even the toughest challenges. Most importantly, I've learned that the most profound changes come from believing in the potential of every individual we serve and being open to continuous learning and growth. These lessons have not only shaped the foundation but also enriched my personal growth and understanding.
