What inspired you to embark on this soul-stirring journey to the remote village of Komic, and how did the idea for the Planet Spiti Foundation come to life?
My journey to Komic was driven by a deep sense of calling. I’ve always felt a pull towards the mountains, and when I first visited Spiti Valley, something in me just clicked. The simplicity of life, the untouched beauty, and the warm-hearted people created an instant connection. But alongside this beauty, I also saw the challenges faced by the community, particularly in terms of education and opportunities for the younger generation.
The idea for Planet Spiti Foundation took shape as I spent more time in the region. I realized that to make a true difference, I needed to invest in the future of these children, helping them gain access to quality education and skills that could empower them to build a better life. It was a combination of my love for the place, my late beloved father, and my desire to give back that led me to start the foundation. Now, it’s not just a project; it’s a purpose that drives me every day.
What were the biggest challenges you faced when establishing the Planet Spiti Foundation in such a remote and high-altitude region? How did you overcome them?
Establishing the Planet Spiti Foundation in a remote and high-altitude region like Spiti Valley presented significant challenges. The first major hurdle was the isolation and lack of basic infrastructure. Spiti is cut off from the rest of the world for nearly half the year due to heavy snowfall, making it difficult to access resources and connect with the outside world.
Another challenge was gaining the trust of the local community. As an outsider, it was crucial for me to understand their way of life, their needs, and their aspirations. Building those relationships took time, patience, and a lot of listening. The high altitude also posed significant difficulties. The harsh weather conditions and thin air made it physically demanding to carry out everyday tasks, let alone run an organization. Even something as simple as transporting materials or setting up a stable internet connection was daunting.
I overcame these challenges by focusing on collaboration and community involvement. I partnered with local leaders and gained their support, which was key to integrating the foundation’s work into the community. We also adapted our plans to the unique conditions of Spiti, relying on local knowledge and sustainable practices to overcome logistical hurdles. Most importantly, I learned to be patient and resilient. Progress in such a challenging environment is slow, but with determination and the unwavering support of the Spiti community, we’ve been able to create a meaningful impact.

The core vision of the Planet Spiti Foundation is to create sustainable development in the Spiti Valley while preserving its unique cultural and environmental heritage. We aim to empower the local community, particularly underprivileged children, by providing them with access to quality education and opportunities that will help them build a brighter future without having to leave their homeland.
Our mission is to foster a holistic approach to education, one that integrates traditional knowledge with modern skills. We believe that by combining these two elements, we can equip the younger generation with the tools they need to thrive while staying true to their roots. Additionally, we’re deeply committed to promoting environmental sustainability, ensuring that the pristine beauty and resources of Spiti are protected for future generations.
Looking ahead, I envision the Planet Spiti Foundation becoming a model of sustainable development in high-altitude regions. We hope to expand our educational initiatives, create more job opportunities, and continue to build strong community ties. Ultimately, our goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where the people of Spiti can flourish, and where their traditions and environment are respected and preserved.

You’ve pioneered an innovative educational model at the world's highest village. Could you elaborate on the key components of this model and how it differs from traditional education systems?
Our educational model at the Planet Spiti Foundation is designed to be deeply rooted in the unique culture and environment of Spiti while also equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a modern world. One of the key components of our model is the integration of traditional knowledge with contemporary education. In addition to standard subjects like mathematics, science, and language arts, we place a strong emphasis on local wisdom, including traditional farming techniques, local crafts, and sustainable living practices that are essential in a high-altitude environment like Spiti.
Another crucial aspect of our model is experiential learning. We believe that education should extend beyond the classroom, so we involve students in hands-on projects that teach them about environmental stewardship, community service, and practical skills that are directly relevant to their lives. This might include working on the school’s organic garden, participating in waste management initiatives, or raising dental hygiene awareness within the villages.
Lastly, our model focuses on fostering a sense of global citizenship while preserving cultural identity. We encourage students to understand and appreciate their cultural heritage while also preparing them to engage with the broader world. This balance is key to empowering them to stay in Spiti, contribute to their community, and yet have the confidence and skills to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. What sets our model apart is this deep integration of local relevance with global awareness, all within the context of a supportive, close-knit community. It’s not just about academic achievement; it’s about cultivating a generation of young people who are knowledgeable, resourceful, and deeply connected to their roots.
How has the local community in Komic and the broader Spiti Valley region responded to the foundation's initiatives? What role do they play in the success of the boarding school?
The response from the local community in Komic and the broader Spiti Valley has been nothing short of heartwarming and inspiring. From the very beginning, the people of Spiti have embraced the vision of the Planet Spiti Foundation with open arms, seeing it not just as an outside initiative but as a collaborative effort to uplift the entire region.
The community plays a crucial role in the success of our boarding school. They are not just passive beneficiaries; they are active participants every step of the way. Local villagers contribute their knowledge, skills, and time—whether it's helping with construction, volunteering to cook or assist with daily chores at the school, or sharing their traditional wisdom with the students. This involvement ensures that the school remains deeply connected to the cultural and environmental fabric of Spiti.
Moreover, the parents and elders in the community have shown immense trust in our mission. They recognize the value of quality, free education that honors their heritage while preparing their children for the future. This trust has been a driving force in our success, encouraging us to continually strive to meet and exceed their expectations. In essence, the foundation’s initiatives have flourished because they are a true partnership with the local community. The people of Spiti are at the heart of everything we do, and their ongoing support and engagement are what make our boarding school—and indeed all our projects—thrive.
Can you share some stories or experiences of the students who have benefited from the Planet Spiti Foundation’s programs? How has their education impacted their lives?
Certainly! The stories of our students at the Planet Spiti Foundation are incredibly inspiring and a true testament to the transformative power of education.
Take, for example, Tenzin Norzom, a bright 8-year-old girl from a remote village in Spiti called Kiamo. Before joining our boarding school, Norzom’s educational opportunities were extremely limited. Harsh winters made it nearly impossible for her to attend school regularly, and access to quality learning resources was scarce. Her parents were contemplating sending her to a nunnery to reduce their financial burden. However, since becoming part of our foundation's programs, Norzom has blossomed. She is excelling in her studies and has developed a passion for environmental conservation, music, dance, and other co-curricular activities. She now dreams of becoming a scientist to help protect the fragile ecosystem of Spiti. Her confidence and enthusiasm are palpable, and it’s clear that the foundation’s holistic approach to education has opened up a world of possibilities for her.
Another student, Thinley Gonpo, was initially shy and hesitant when he joined our school. Coming from a family of nomadic herders, Gonpo had never experienced a structured learning environment before. However, through our programs, which emphasize both academic learning and practical life skills, he found his voice. He is now a leader among his peers, passionate about preserving his heritage.
These are just a couple of the many stories that highlight the profound impact of our educational model. By providing these young children with not only an education but also a sense of purpose and connection to their roots, we’re helping to shape a brighter future for them—and for the entire Spiti Valley. Seeing these students grow into confident, capable young individuals is the greatest reward and reinforces our commitment to expanding the reach and impact of the Planet Spiti Foundation.

Sustainability is a key focus of your work. How do you ensure that the foundation’s initiatives are environmentally and financially sustainable in the long term?
Sustainability is truly at the heart of everything we do at the Planet Spiti Foundation. Given the unique landscape of Spiti, it’s essential that our initiatives not only support the community but also protect and preserve the natural surroundings for generations to come. On the environmental side, we’ve integrated eco-friendly practices into every aspect of our work. For instance, our school is built using traditional architecture combined with modern, energy-efficient designs. We utilize solar power for electricity and heating, which not only reduces our carbon footprint but also ensures that we’re not overly reliant on external resources that are hard to come by in such a remote area. Additionally, our curriculum includes environmental education, teaching students about sustainable practices such as gardening, waste management, and the importance of conserving the local ecosystem. These young minds will become the stewards of Spiti’s environment, ensuring that our efforts are carried forward well into the future.
Financial sustainability is equally critical. To support our programs, we’ve developed a model that blends traditional education with community-driven revenue-generating activities. For example, we produce and sell organic farm produce, wool products, and other handmade items crafted by local artisans during the winters. This not only provides a steady stream of income to sustain the foundation’s operations but also creates jobs and empowers the community economically. We’ve also built strong partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals who share our vision, helping us secure ongoing funding and resources to expand our impact.
How do you incorporate mentorship into your educational model? What kind of personal and professional development opportunities do you offer to both students and staff?
Mentorship is a cornerstone of our educational model at the Planet Spiti Foundation. We believe that learning goes beyond the classroom and that students and staff alike grow best when they are supported by a community of mentors who inspire, guide, and challenge them.
For our students, mentorship starts with our volunteer teachers, who play a dual role as educators and life coaches. They don’t just teach subjects; they nurture the students' overall development, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and resilience. We also invite professionals from various fields—such as environmentalists, artists, and entrepreneurs—to engage with our students, offering workshops, talks, and hands-on projects. These interactions expose the children to a world of possibilities and help them discover their passions and potential career paths.
We encourage peer mentorship among our volunteers, fostering an environment where they can share ideas, support one another, and grow together, by integrating mentorship into every level of our model, we’re not just educating; we’re building a community where everyone—students and community alike—can thrive, evolve, and become leaders in their own right.

What are your future goals for the Planet Spiti Foundation? Are there plans to expand the model to other remote regions in the Himalayas or beyond?
Our future goals for the Planet Spiti Foundation are deeply rooted in our commitment to creating lasting, positive change in the lives of children in Spiti Valley. We aim to strengthen our existing programs by further improving access to quality education, expanding our sustainability and education initiatives, and deepening our engagement with the local community.
One of our primary goals is to enhance the educational experience for our students by introducing more innovative teaching methods, vocational training, and mentorship opportunities. We want to equip the children not just with academic knowledge but also with life skills that will empower them to thrive in any environment.
In terms of expansion, we are indeed exploring the possibility of replicating our model in other remote regions of the Himalayas and beyond. However, our approach will always be thoughtful and community-driven. We believe that each region has its own unique needs and challenges, so any expansion would be tailored to respect and respond to the local context.
Ultimately, our vision is to create a network of sustainable, community-centered educational initiatives across the Himalayas that can inspire similar efforts in other remote areas around the world. We’re excited about the future and look forward to continuing this journey of transformation with the support of our global community.
How important are partnerships to the success of the foundation? Can you share some examples of meaningful collaborations that have significantly contributed to your mission?
Partnerships are absolutely vital to the success of the Planet Spiti Foundation. They bring in diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives that help us enhance our impact and reach. One of our most significant collaborations has been with local organizations and community leaders in Spiti. Their deep understanding of the region has been invaluable in tailoring our programs to meet local needs effectively. Our current collaboration with a local NGO named Rinchen Zangpo Society and its private primary school in another village named Rongtong is one of the best examples of meaningful partnerships, as we have now expanded. Our initiative now benefits over 150 children in the age group of 3-9 years, which is a significant change considering we started with only three students in 2021.
